Dolphin display

We've just had a fascinating couple of days. On Monday we decided to go up the Bartin River, which is interesting for two reasons. There are only two navigable rivers on the Turkish Black Sea coast and this is one of them but there are two lots of electricity cables strung across the mouth of the river and no-one seems to have a reliable record of their height. Our pilot guide says that a 14 metre boat has got in there but it went on to say that the height of the cables was also 14 metres which doesn't add up so we were still worried as our mast is 16.4 mtrs high. I'm sure we had at least a metre to spare but it looked very, very close as we approached them!

In the top picture the cables in the top right hand corner, and the chart shows the route we took - very carefully. It is very picturesque, but was very hot as there was no breeze.

Then yesterday on the way to Eregli, where we are now, we were treated to a fantastic display by about 5 dolphins who swam under around our bow for about 5 minutes. I'm not sure if I can get a video clip on here, but here are some of the photos we took.

The photos don't do the actual display justice - it was breath taking. They just kept pace with the boat and every so often they flipped over to see if we were watching!

Turns out I could upload a video but not very high definition.

  1. Well done. Proof of concept. Good that the sea is clear - better than the North Sea!
